Wedding Dress Shopping in Somerset — Why You Should Always Try Before You Buy

If you've ever been handed a dress and told to "just imagine it in your size," this one's for you!

She drove 45 minutes to her appointment. She'd saved the date weeks in advance, spent the evening beforescrolling through Pinterest, picked out her favourite styles, and gone to bedwith that rare, lovely feeling of having something exciting to look forward to.

She arrived. She was offered a glass of prosecco. The stylist was perfectly pleasant. And then the dress came off the rail, a size 10 sample and was held up against her body while the stylist smiled and said: "Just try to imagine it in your size." She drove home in silence.

This story isn't unusual. In fact, it's one of the most common things we hear from brides who come to usafter visiting other boutiques. The industry has a quiet, rarely-discussed problem: most bridal boutiques stock samples only in very small sizes, typically a 10 or 12, and expect brides of every shape and size to somehow picture themselves in a dress they cannot wear, cannot feel, cannot actually experience.

Think about what that moment asks of a bride. You're already nervous. You're already in a vulnerable, emotionally-charged situation. You're hoping for that magical, movie-moment feeling. And instead you're handed a dress that doesn't fit and told to use your imagination.

For some brides, it's simply disappointing. For others, particularly those who already carry anxiety about their bodies, or who've spent years being told they don't quite fit the"ideal" it can be genuinely crushing. You leave not having found a dress, yes. But you also leave feeling like the problem was you. Like your body was the inconvenience. It wasn't. It never is.

At Somerset Bridal, we made a decision a long time ago that this simply wasn't good enough. Our sample dresses, in both our Boutique and our Outlet, run from a size 6 to a size 46. Every single one of them is there to be tried on. Not held up against you. Not pinned to a mannequin for you to squint at. Actually worn, in the fitting room, by you.

Because here's what we know after over 10 years of helping brides find their dress: the moment you put on the right gown, something happens. Your posture changes. Your face changes. The room goes quiet. That is a real, physical, felt experience and no amount of imagination can replicate it.

We also know that the dress you end up falling in love with is almost never the one you pictured. Brides come in with a phone full of saved images: all the same silhouette, all the same neckline  etc. They leave with something completely different, because they tried it on and their body told them something their Pinterest board couldn't. That only happens when you can actually try things on.

If you've had an appointment somewhere that made you feel like your size was a problem, we want you to know it wasn't. You were simply in the wrong room. Come and find the right one.

We have two stores right next door to each other in Minehead. Our Boutique for the full luxury designer experience. Our Outlet for those who want designer quality at a fraction of the price. Both offer the same private, unhurried, no-pressure appointment. Both have samples in every size.

You don't have to imagine anything. You just have to show up.
